Workout Programming

Workout programming is a feature that allows gym and studio owners to build, organize, and display structured workouts for their classes and private training sessions. They can see this before, during and after class. If you would like this available on your end, contact Support@recess.tv to toggle this on.

Key concepts

Cards:

A card is a single section of a workout. Think of it as one component of a larger program. For example, a Card might be a "Warm Up," a "Strength Block," or a "Cool Down." Each card contains a list of exercises and can be configured with a time cap, AMRAP, EMOM, or a set number of reps. The name of the card is visible to clients.

Programs:

A Program is a full workout made up of one or more cards. This is where you build out the complete structure of a class or personal training session. Programs can be attached to classes so clients can view and follow along.

How to attach a Program to a class

  • Go to Schedule & Programming and open the class you want to edit
  • Click More Details
  • Select the Program you want to add to the class
  • Save your changes

Player View:

Once a program is attached to a class, clients can follow along through the player view, which guides them through each card and exercise with timers and round tracking.

Tips

  • Programs and Cards can be duplicated to save time when building similar workouts
  • You can create a new version of Cards or you can edit the original
  • You can preview how a Program will appear to clients before attaching it to a class

How Can I Set Up A Workout Program:

  • Head over to schedule & Programming
  • workout programming
  • Click create new program or the plus sign on the upper side

  • Place a name for the program
  • Tags (optional)

Making a new template:

  • Click on "Configure" if you owuld like to make a new template
  • Name: The name of the card as it will appear to clients. This field is optional but recommended.
  • Internal Name: An optional internal label to help you identify the card on the dashboard. If left empty, it will default to the card name.
  • Type: Select the workout type to automate and fine-tune performance tracking (e.g., AMRAP, EMOM, Time Cap, Reps).
  • Pattern: Optional. Use a comma-separated or arithmetic pattern to express complex repetitions across multiple rounds or sets (e.g., a ladder format).
  • Time Cap: Optional: Set a duration and interval to display a timer for clients during the workout.
  • Number of Rounds/Sets: Optional. Set how many times the exercise sequence should repeat. If used with a comma-separated pattern, the system will pick the lowest number of rounds between the two. If used with an arithmetic pattern, this limits the total number of rounds.
  • Video: Optional. Upload a video to accompany the card. This can be an explanation of the workout or a demonstration. Minimum size 640x400px, maximum 5000MB.
    • Click Done to save the Card details and scroll down to add exercises

How to add exercises to a Card

Each card can contain one or more exercises. Here is how to set them up:

  • Under Exercise #1, you will see Option 1 by default
  • Set the quantity and pattern and select the Exercise from the dropdown

Adding equipment

  • Click Add Equipment under the exercise to specify what equipment is needed
  • Select the equipment type, weight, and metric (e.g., kg, lbs)
  • You can add multiple pieces of equipment per exercise by clicking Add Equipment again

Adding an alternative option

  • If the exercise is not suitable for all clients, click the "+" New Option button to add an alternative exercise
  • This is useful for offering a scaled or modified version of a movement (e.g., a push-up instead of a handstand push-up)
  • Each option can have its own quantity, pattern, exercise selection, and equipment

Adding a new exercise

  • Click Add a New Exercise at the bottom to add another exercise to the Card
  • Repeat the steps above for each exercise you want to include
  • Once all exercises are added, click Done to save the Card

You can add an existing card or create a new one to the program you are building.

Previewing your Program

Once your Program is saved, you can preview how it will look before attaching it to a class:

  • Click Preview at the top of the Program page

  • Hover over the available view options to explore each one:
    • Board - displays the workout in a board format, ideal for showing on a screen in the gym
    • Preview - a general overview of the program as clients will see it
    • Score - shows how scores and performance tracking will appear
    • Player - the guided client experience that walks through each exercise with timers
    • Player (Circuit) - a circuit-style version of the player view
    • Presenta - a presentation-style display of the workout

Each view gives you a sense of how clients will experience the program depending on how you choose to share it.

Tips

  • Cards and Programs can be duplicated to save time when building similar workouts
  • If a Card has already been used, you can create a new version rather than editing the original
  • Always preview your Program before attaching it to a class to make sure everything looks correct
